No white artist has sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals are so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Not to be confused with Brazilian jazz singer Tania Maria, Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be, Rick James, who ended up doing all of the writing and producing for her debut album of 1979, Wild and Peaceful. That LP, which boasted her hit duet with James, "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love," didn't show Marie's picture -- so many programmers at black radio just assumed she was black. When her second album, Lady T, came out, much of the R&B world was shocked to see how fair-skinned she was. But to many of the black R&B fans who were eating her music up, it really didn't matter -- the bottom line was she was a first-rate soul singer whose love of black culture ran deep.
By her third album, 1980's gold Irons in the Fire, Marie was doing most of her own writing and producing. That album boasted the major hit "I Need Your Lovin'," and Marie went gold again with her next album, It Must Be Magic (which included the major hit "Square Biz"). It Must Be Magic turned out to be her last album for Motown, which she had a nasty legal battle with. Marie got out of her contract with Motown, and the case ended up with the courts passing what is known as "The Teena Marie Law" -- which states that a label cannot keep an artist under contract without putting out an album by him or her.

Switching to Epic in 1983, Marie recorded her fifth album, Robbery, and had a hit with "Fix It." In 1984, Marie recorded her sixth album, Starchild, and had her biggest pop hit ever with "Lovergirl." Though Marie had often soared to the top of the R&B charts, "Lovergirl" marked the first time she'd done so well in the pop market. Ironically, Marie was a white singer who had enjoyed little exposure outside the R&B market prior to "Lovegirl."

Three more Epic albums followed: 1986's Emerald City, 1988's Naked to the World (which contained her smash hit "Ooh La La La"), and 1990's Ivory. Unfortunately, Marie's popularity had faded considerably by the late '80s, and Epic dropped her. In 1994, the singer released Passion Play on her own Sarat label. Ten years later, she signed to Cash Money and released La Doña, featuring assistance from Gerald LeVert, Rick James, and MC Lyte. Sapphire followed two years later.

Sunday night's death of Ali-Ollie Woodson, who sang lead for the Temptations in the 1980s and 1990s, sadly extends one of popular music's most star-crossed stories.

Four of the five original Tempations also died young — a tragic turn for a group that made some of the most enduring music of the last half century.

Woodson, who was 58, died of cancer, from which he had been suffering for many years.

R&B Singer John Carter, The Dells, dies at 75

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Singer John Carter, a double inductee into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame as lead tenor of two Chicago-based rhythm and blues groups, died Friday in Harvey following a battle with lung cancer.

Carter was 75.

He was a founding member of the Flamingos, who were inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall in 2000. The group recorded for Chicago-based Chess Records and was best known for the hits "Golden Teardrops" and a soulful rendition of the standard "I Only Have Eyes for You."

Carter moved in 1960 to the Dells, who had formed in 1952 as a doo-wop group at Thornton Township High School, in Harvey. He replaced lead tenor Johnny Funches and led the R&B group for the next 49 years.

The Dells had first hit the charts with Funches singing lead in 1956, but found their greatest success once Carter joined the group, scoring 46 hits on the rhythm and blues charts, eight of which also charted on the rock Top 40, also recording during much of that time for Chess and its subsidiary labels.

The Dells were inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall in 2004.

"We're going to try to give them great support," said Marshall Thompson, lead tenor with another Chicago-based R&B group, the Chi-Lites, who said he was informed of Carter's passing by fellow Dells vocalist Chuck Barksdale.

Funeral arrangements were pending.

The Dells have been singing and performing for over five decades, have sold millions of records, and are considered the most enduring vocal group in the history of Rhythm and Blues. Affectionately known as The Mighty Dells by fans and leaders in the music industry, its members – including Marvin Junior (lead baritone), John Carter (lead tenor), Charles Barksdale (bass), Michael McGill (baritone) and Verne Allison (second tenor) – have continued to set the standard for top-to-bottom male harmony.

Initially known as the El-Rays, The Dells started in 1952 in Harvey, Illinois, as five friends from high school. Eventually, the El-Rays cut their very first single, “Darling I Know,” for Chess Records. It went nowhere. Two years later, with a new record contract with Vee Jay Records as The Dells, they released their 3rd recording “Oh What A Night.” It became an immediate R&B hit, finishing third behind Elvis' Don't Be Cruel at number two and Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill on top.

By 1960, The Dells were soon opening and touring for Dinah Washington. Here they fashioned their hypnotic melodious sound and caught the attention of Ray Charles. The Dells soon began touring with Charles, singing more ballads and standards and incorporating jazz into their singing styles.

By 1967, The Dells began charting a string of R&B & Pop Billboard hits, including 3 number one R&B hits: “Oh What A Night,” certified as a million seller in 1956 & 1969; “Stay in My Corner,” the very first million selling single that was 6 minutes and 10 seconds long; and “Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation,” a certified million seller – plus 44 Billboard R&B and POP Charted Recordings. These hits transformed The Dells from an opening act from a Chicago suburb to major concert headliners around the world.

In 1991, Robert Townsend released The Five Heartbeats, an acclaimed movie based on the lives and careers of The Dells. This film produced another R&B Billboard chart hit, “A Heart Is a House for Love,” and introduced The Dells to a younger generation of R&B music lovers. The Dells were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

In 2006, the music still endures, the vocal harmony endears, and the rich legacy of The Dells has earned the group a place in musical history.

b. Herbert Randal Cain III, 2nd May 1945, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

d. 9th April 2009, Maple Shade, New Jersey, U.S.A.

Randy Cain, of the Sweet Soul vocal group, the Delfonics has died. He was 63.

Randy was an original member of the Delfonics and the founder of Blue Magic.

His death was confirmed by Rob O’Neal, an investigator with the Burlington County medical examiner’s office on Thursday the 9th of April 2009.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. The Delfonics were formed in Philadelphia by Randy, along with William and Wilbert Hart and
Ritchie Daniels as the Four Gents and later the Orphonics,.

The group came to the attention of promoter/record shop owner Stan Watson, who introduced them to producer Thom Bell and Moon Shot Records.

They then changed their name to the Delfonics, and scored two regional hits on Moon Shot before Stan created his own Philly Groove imprint.

Ritchie Daniels was then drafted into the military.

The remaining trio achieved 16 pop and 20 R & B hit records, including 'La La Means I Love You' (number 4 pop, number 2 R & B in 1968),
'I'm Sorry', 'Ready Or Not Here I Come' (both 1968) and 'Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)' (number 10 pop, number 3 R & B in 1970).

Randy left the group in 1971 (and was replaced by Major Harris) and two years later joined the group Blue Magic by combining, singer and songwriter,
Ted Mills with the quartet group Shades of Love.

Blue Magic had several hits, including, 'Sideshow' (number 8), in 1974.

Randy returned to the Delfonics in the 1980's, (singing with Major Harris, who had left for a solo career in 1974 but returned as well),
before leaving for the last time.

RANDY CAIN, who was a founding member of Philly soul band the Delfonics and who sang on such hits as "La La Means I Love You," and
"Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," died Thursday. He was 63.

No cause of death was yet known for Cain, who formed the Delfonics with brothers William and Wilbert Hart while attending Overbrook High in the 1960s.

Cain left the group in 1971 and formed the Group "BLUE MAGIC" in 1973

Isaac Hayes, Soul Legend And The Voice Of 'South Park' Character Chef, Dead At 65
Singer/songwriter died Sunday afternoon.

Isaac Hayes — a legendary soul singer, songwriter, musician and producer whose career spanned four decades and who achieved unexpected fame later in life as the voice of "South Park" character Chef — died Sunday afternoon (August 10), a spokesperson for the Shelby County, Tennesee, sheriff's department told WMC-TV in Memphis.

Hayes' wife found him on the floor near a treadmill inside his home, according to the station's Web site. Hayes was taken to Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, where he was pronounced dead at 2:08 p.m.

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department are continuing their investigation into Hayes' death, but they believe no foul play was involved, the report said. Hayes was 65.

Born in Covington, Tennessee, in 1942, Hayes was a key figure in the development of the 1960s Southern soul sound before going on to a successful solo career.

He made his public singing debut in church at the age of 5, and taught himself piano and saxophone before relocating to Memphis and performing with groups there, according to All-Music Guide. In 1964, he began playing with the Mar-Keys, which led to his long stint as a musician, songwriter and producer for the legendary Memphis soul label Stax Records.

Over the following years, Hayes and songwriting partner David Porter wrote a reported 200 songs, including such soul classics as Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'," Carla Thomas' "B-A-B-Y" and Johnnie Taylor's "I Had a Dream."

Hayes released his debut solo album in 1967, but his breakthrough came two years later with the classic Hot Buttered Soul, which featured lush, ambitious arrangements and an innovative structure, and exerted a profound influence on many soul albums to come — not least Marvin Gaye's What's Going On.

In 1971, Hayes reached the peak of his musical popularity with the single and album Shaft, the score from the film. The song not only was an archetypal slice of funk that garnered Hayes a #1 single and Grammy and Academy Awards, the talk-singing style he employed on it exerted a huge influence on rap music.

After the strong albums Black Moses and Joy, Hayes' popularity waned in the coming years, exacerbated by a legal battle with Stax over royalties. He filed for bankruptcy in 1976.

Hayes continued to perform and record over the following years, but he didn't reappear on the mainstream radar until 1997, when he provided the voice for the "South Park" character Jerome "Chef" McElroy. Originally intended to be a one-off appearance, Hayes' character quickly became one of the show's most popular characters, providing the main children characters with advice and often breaking into comical R&B love songs that parody some of the songs he'd written in the first place. Hayes sang the notorious "Chocolate Salty Balls" on the "South Park" album Chief Aid.

A Scientologist since the mid 1990s, Hayes parted company with the show after a 2005 show that skewered the religion. A press release announcing his separation from Comedy Central, which airs "South Park," was issued in March 2006. Hayes reportedly suffered a stroke in early 2006, and was occasionally unsteady in public appearances thereafter.

Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The following statement was issued Sunday by Soulsville USA:

Isaac is one of the most beloved members of the Stax family and we all cherish him. He will be missed not only by us, but also by the entire world and the millions of people who love him as much as we do.

"Marc Willis, CEO of the Soulsville Foundation, said, "Isaac was unique and an inspiration to us all. His accomplishments as a musician are unparalleled. But more than that, he was a very dear friend and great supporter of the Soulsville Foundation mission, particularly the work we do with children. We will miss him and his wonderful presence more than we can convey at this time."

Removed from his heavy funk days, Larry Graham mixes this album with ballads and midtempo numbers. The chart-topper from this album was the title track "Just Be My Lady." With his brawn sound, Graham sails through the lyric with agility and ease. With its affectionate connotation, the single became a popular wedding number; it peaked at number four on the Billboard R&B charts after 19 weeks. On an even more serene note, "Guess Who" was released as the follow-up single. It only fared at number 69 after a mere four weeks on the charts; however, it is still a touching number. While side one is filled with one ballad after another, side two has all moderate numbers. Some selections are shaded with Graham's do wop and gospel influence, and all have much appeal.
